ESSO – European Safe Search and Operations is a European project designed to revolutionize disaster response in high-risk environments by combining autonomous robotics, resilient communications, and ethical artificial intelligence. The initiative develops a Multi-Function Autonomous System (MFAS) that integrates drones (UAVs) and ground robots (UGVs) to support firefighters, civil protection, and first responders during natural disasters or conflict-related emergencies. Through an adaptive, self-healing 5G network combined with 3D mapping and edge AI, ESSO ensures control, situational awareness, and operational safety even when infrastructure or GPS services are unavailable. The project targets TRL 7, validating its solutions through real-world missions in Spain, Greece, Romania, and Ukraine. Human-centered design is at the heart of ESSO: augmented-reality interfaces, AI-driven risk analysis, and computer-assisted triage enhance decision-making and reduce workload for first responders. Partner universities lead training and co-design activities with practitioners to guarantee usability, ethical compliance, and social acceptance. ESSO merges technological excellence with human values to strengthen Europe’s resilience, protect communities, and make the work of those who save lives safer and more effective every day.
